Winnipeg Zumba for a Cause

Winnipeg Zumba for a Cause

Posted on June 27, 2016December 2, 2019 by Phen Facundo

A well-attended Zumba for a cause happened in North Centennial Community Centre the night of June 25, 2016. Refreshments were served and raffle prizes were given away after the 90-minute calorie burning activity.  My muscles are still sore as I write this article, but I don’t complain because I fully understand the “no pain no gain principle” in achieving a fitness goal.

Majority of the attendees were Filipinos as shown in the photo below and this was not a surprise. Pinoys love to dance, to be fit, to socialize and to help. These ingredients put together guaranteed the success of the event.

Proceeds go to The MS Society of Canada, which provides services to people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their families, and funds research to find the cause and cure for this disease. MS is seldom fatal but is the most common disabling neurologic disease. It is currently classified as an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord.

Did you know that multiple sclerosis is also branded as Canada’s disease by the MS Society?

This is because the country has the highest rate of multiple sclerosis in the world. MS incidence is higher in colder climates and people of Northern European descent have the highest risk of developing MS, no matter where they live. The cause of MS is still unknown. Though treatment options are available to delay the progression of MS and reduce flare-ups, no cure is available.

Kudos to the WinnipegBikeRiders who initiated this fund-raising campaign, to their sponsors, to all volunteers, and of course to ZIN Winnipeg (Zumba Instructor Network) who gave their best that night to make the event fun and worthwhile. It was a great idea to encourage fitness in the community, bond with friends, meet new ones and have a blast with them while you support a good cause.

Zumba pa more!!!
