As outlined in “Bakit Winnipeg Pinoy?“, the Filipino-Canadian community in Winnipeg continues to grow in numbers and in influence. Indeed, we are on the threshold of becoming the group that would significantly impact Winnipeg society in the next decade or so. But a good majority of Filipinos are unaware of this new reality, preferring to isolate ourselves within the confines of our immediately families or small groups of relatives and friends, and keeping ourselves busy making a living.
I believe that we can achieve the happy and prosperous life we were all looking for here in Canada faster and better if we see ourselves as cooperators, even collaborators, instead of competitors for jobs, resources, opportunities, etc. A small shift in our mindset towards believing that “there’s more than enough to go around for everyone to enjoy and share” (abundance mentality), instead of “there’s only so much so I better keep it all to myself” (scarcity mentality), can go a long way in building an awesome future for our children in this place, a community we now call our home.
In order to move towards cooperation, we need to:
- see beyond the confines of our family and small circle of friends to visualize a thriving community that supports the growth and success of all members;
- recognize that such a community does not magically happen overnight, but takes investments of time and effort to make connections, earn mutual trust, and create bonds that can overcome adversities;
- create opportunities to interact and connect over and above established institutions such as churches, professional and regional associations, and other formal and informal groups.
Winnipeg Pinoy is envisioned to provide a venue to interact, connect and exchange information, goods and services online and beyond. Learn more about Winnipeg Pinoy and it’s goals by clicking on this link.
- makita ng bawat isa ang posibilidad ng maunlad na komunidad na mas malaki at malawak kaysa sa pamilya at iilang kaibigan;
- tanggapin na ang maunlad na komunidad ay pinamumuhunan ng oras at pagsisikap na gumawa ng koneksiyon, kumita ng tiwala, at bumuo ng bukluran na makakalampas sa anumang pagsubok;
