August 2013
After some reflection and planning over the summer, my online activities started to increase as temperature began to fall… and Winnipeg Pinoy was born.
It was envisioned to be a community for Filipinos in Winnipeg, Manitoba and surrounding municipalities/cities as we are becoming an undeniable force shaping the future of our new home in Canada. You can read about that vision in the original post in 2013 here.
In the next few years, Winnipeg Pinoy was just one of a number of online Filipino groups reporting on local community events and trends, posting jobs & connecting buyers & sellers, and similar usual online undertakings.
Many of such activities eventually became well-served by the growth of other online groups such as 204 Filipino Marketplace on Facebook with 43,000+ members as of today, and Manitoba BM also on Facebook for those applying to migrate to Manitoba with almost 13,000 members.
Community event reporting is adequately covered by traditional channels like Manitoba Filipino Journal and CKJS 810 AM radio.
A Different Purpose
As the Filipino community in Manitoba continues to grow, there’s a need for a voice beyond merely reporting on stories that matter to Pinoys, or facilitating connections based on needs and wants.
There’s a need to hear perspectives that might not be popular, or downright difficult to hear and accept.
We migrated to Winnipeg for a better life.
- Not to continue the part of our culture that we left behind that did not work out so well for many of us.
- Not to transplant a dysfunctional way of life that is incompatible with Canadian culture.
- Instead, we want to infuse the best of what Filipinos can offer to our new home.
We want to infuse the best of what Filipinos can offer
to our new home.
It’s an opportunity to start anew. For Filipinos who are striving to become better in their new life away from the Philippines, this fresh reboot is for you.
Winnipeg Pinoy intends to offer a different perspective for you to consider, and know that you are not alone in your journey towards your Canadian dream life.
Yes, we can Win this Pinoys!
Are you among the few who have not settled and instead are looking for a better way?
Then, you are a WinPinoy.
Come back every Wednesday for a new post (Thursday for Tagalog/Filipino version).
